The 162 kilometers (101 mi) Ratna Fall is the highest in the Kandy district and widest in Sri Lanka. The tributary to the Mahawali River, Hasalaka Oya from the Knuckles mountain range irrigates the rice fields of the surrounding villages in the eastern valley of Mahiyangana, after the panorama.
Superstitious villagers say that there were seven vessels filled with precious stones hidden close to the fall, but five of them have now been found. However, anyone attempting to find the final two will meet an untimely death at the bottom of the fall.
The route to the fall starts by the Hasalake Anicat (barrage). Turn left onto a side road and continue until the footpath along irrigation waterway dam. Passing Alongside terraced rice fields of the village the Eke-Ela peasant Colony. From here, the waterway and footpath leads to the fall after four kilometers (2.5 mi); fully covered by a thick dry zone jungle with wild monkeys.
The jungle is part of Victoria, Randenigala and Rantambe sanctuary. There is fantastic trekking in the tropical dry zone jungle in Sri Lanka.
