Outline Syllabus

The week-long V!VA Boot Camp for travel guidebook writing will cover the following areas:

 

• Daily excursions into the city to get practical experience writing reviews about hotels, restaurants, activities and tours.

 

• Time spent every day reviewing and critiquing the writing of the group, with the goal of improving writing, including feedback from professional travel writers and peers.

 

• Learning how to write background guidebook content, such as country histories, politics, geography.

 

• How to hit a town prepared for the job of travel guidebook writer - knowing how to glean all of the different types of information that you need quickly and efficiently.

 

• Writing guidebook material that is suited to a broad audience, with special focus on the concepts of value and passing judgment.

 

• How to pitch stories to editors, and how to get paid and published.

 

• An introductory course on how to produce digital photography for the internet.
