At the edge of the barely-there village of Mayacenter lies Nu’uk Che’il Cottages. A local hotspot for traditional medicine, the site features rows of rustic rooms sprinkled among flowering tropical plants. Rooms from singles to quads have fans and either shared or private baths with hot water. A centralized building serves as a dining hall and classroom.

Although the rooms are aqequate and the simple food is tasty, visitors come to Nu’uk Che’il for the extras. Mayan healer and artist Aurora Saqui conducts cupping, purification ceremonies and provides lectures. Visitors can arrange guided walks through a short nature trail as an introducation to local medicinal plants. Collect leaves and pound them into an after-bite tonic that will be necessary upon your return; the quantity of mosquitoes is astounding.

If your plan is to get away from the cottages, Aurora’s husband, Ernesto, guides birding , tubing and waterfall tours in the stunning Cockscomb Basin 45 minutes away.
