San Ignacio
The small town of San Ignacio is a hub for travelers, offering all the best in cheap, quality amenities. Straddling the west bank of the Macal River, only 35 km from the city of Belmopan, San Ignacio is a sleepy town offering pleasing scenery and quick access to ruins and reserves.
If you happen to be in San Ignacio during March, be sure to watch the start line of La Ruta Maya, an annual canoe race. The paddlers go all the way to Belize City, and although anyone is welcome to enter the adventurous race, don't count on beating the seasoned guides.
