V!VA User‘s Description
In the northwest corner of Belize sits the Orange Walk District. Much of the area has been developed for sugar cane cultivation. The main town, Orange Walk, is small, but home to a diverse population, including Chinese, Maya, Mennonites, and East Indians.
One of the main attractions here is Lamanai, meaning "submerged crocodile," a Mayan ceremonial site. The main temple is the largest of pre-classic structures in the Mayan world. The total site area encompasses over 950 acres and can be accessed from Orange Walk town.
Other area highlights include the Shipstern Nature Reserve and the largest body of water in the country, the New River Lagoon. There are over 400 recorded bird species in the district, making Orange Walk a birdwatcher's paradise.
