Lamanai Ruins

Getting to Lamanai is all part of the fun on this trip, as it involves a one and a half hour safari-style boat ride along a forested river. Guides will keep their eyes out for animals-you can find herons, vultures, kingfishers and crocodiles-and also spot some of the local dungaree-wearing Mennonite people, who are of German descent. They live in their own communes, don't pay taxes and are an important producer of poultry for the country. The ruins pop out from the treetops when you arrive at the site and after exploring the museum, the guide will take you through the jungle to see the massive mask on the Mask Temple, the Jaguar Temple with its jaguar formation and set you climbing the High Temple before heading off back on the river to Orange Walk.
