Cahuita is fairly safe all over town and in the evenings, but obvious precautions should be taken just in case such as not carrying a lot of money, credit cards or passport, and not leaving valuables out in restaurants or in cars. There have been a few reports of thefts inside the national park so be careful going alone or with expensive equipment. These reports are few, however, and you are more likely to be robbed of your lunch by monkeys. The numbers for emergencies are 117 and 911. (Won’t help get your lunch back.) If driving, it’s recommended not to drive at night, and if stopped by police, always demand a ticket for whatever they may have stopped you for. Don’t be pressured into handing over any cash. If a flat tire or similar problem occurs due to a third party, keep driving to a gas station or populated area before you stop.
