Christopher Columbus founded Puerto Limon in 1502: it went on to become Costa Rica’s most important port from which the country exported bananas and coffee to the world. Columbus Day itself is celebrated with a carnival, Dia de las Culturas, or “day of the cultures,” featuring parades, music, and a generally festive atmosphere.
Historically relevant architecture and open air markets selling the exotic best of what Puerto Limon offers, including wine derived from the cashew nut. Apart from its lively Afro-Caribbean nightlife, Puerto Limon has its own pleasant beaches and easy access to other coastal attractions such as the cities of Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo.
