1.5 kilometers outside of Puerto Viejo, on the Playa Cocles, lies the Totem Hotel Resort & Restaurant. This is surf turf, located not too far from the well-known surfer's haven Beach Break. Totem Hotel strikes a perfect balance in its décor, drawing upon local tropical influences without overdoing it. Rooms are simply decorated, accentuated with bamboo bed frames and a brightly painted yellow and green interior. Standard rooms come with queen size beds, private bath, fan, and telephone. The hotel's six suites come with private pool, living room, coffee-maker, cable TV, mini-bar and ocean vistas.

When you get tired of the beach crowds, slip into the resort's swimming pool, tucked away in a tropical garden. You'll hear the sound of rushing water coming from the pool's own mini-waterfall. After a long day of hitting or (missing) the waves, you can hunker down and relax or warm-up for a night of partying in the hotel's very own Italian restaurant, the Totem Beach Bar and Ostería.  Free wi-fi internet, private parking and continental breakfast are included in the price. Please note that air-conditioning comes at an additional cost of $10. Hot water, money change, safe deposit box, and bike rental ($5) available. Everything surf can be accessed here: lessons at the surf school, equipment and board rental at the surf shop.
