You'll find pretty much everything you need in Puerto Viejo, most within the first 100m of the main street at the Playa Negra end. First the bank, open for business (money changing, cashing travelers cheques, etc) 8am-4pm M-F, 8am-12pm Sat. It also has the town's only ATM which does not accept Switch/Maestro, preferring only Visa or American Express cards. It's open 24hrs, but be careful using it at night. Money and travelers cheques can also be changed at Los Almendros hotel on the beachfront if the bank is shut. Next is the medical centre, approximate opening hours 8am to 6pm, with 24hr emergency service provided. Tel (506) 2705-0079. Alternatively stop by the ATEC tourist information centre, or Veronicas Place for natural medicines or an appointment with an indigenous bush doctor, (keep an open mind). The post office, correos, opens 8am-12pm/1pm-5.30pm, and is opposite the pharmacy, open 8am-6.45pm where conveniently, there is a Western Union money-sending service open until 4pm. The big supermarket nearby is open 8am-8pm and mini markets are scattered all over town. Don't expect any bargains though:, eating in can be as pricey as eating out. Most hotels have international call facilities as do some other places such as ATEC, and Aventuras Bravas surf shop, just look out for the signs. Fresh bread can be bought from Peace&Love by the bus stop, in the big supermarket, or from La Casa del Pan on the other side of town. Recycling is big here, look out for separate bins and remember beer bottles are recycled separately. Prices include a deposit which you receive when returning the bottle.
