Buses are the most economical way to get around Costa Rica, offering extensive and inexpensive coverage throughout the country. There are two kinds of public buses: local, which are cheaper but a bit run-down, and express buses, which have routes between San Jose and most beaches and other cities. Don't take big bags with you on the bus, and keep what you do take at your feet instead of in the overhead racks. For major bus companies, buy tickets in advance and be sure to arrive an hour before departure to avoid losing your reservation.
