Bus

Buses are the most economical way to get around Costa Rica, offering extensive and inexpensive coverage throughout the country. There are two kinds of public buses: local, which are cheaper but a bit run-down, and express buses, which have routes between San Jose and most beaches and other cities. Don't take big bags with you on the bus, and keep what you do take at your feet instead of in the overhead racks. For major bus companies, buy tickets in advance and be sure to arrive an hour before departure to avoid losing your reservation.

For up-to-date schedules and bus stop information, stop by the ICT (Tourism Institute) at Calle 5, Avenidas Central/2, underneath the Palaza de la Cultura in San José, or check online at www.visitcostarica.com

The following is a list of the main private bus lines for travel to tourist destinations, which generally offer very comfortable, air-conditioned rides:

Gray Line Tourist Bus (www.graylinecostarica.com)

Interbus (www.interbusonline.com)

Coach Costa Rica (www.coachcostarica.com)

Buses are also a much cheaper option than planes for crossing the border into Panama or Nicaragua.
