The population of Costa Rica is 4,195,914 (est. July 2008). Annual population growth is currently at 1.38 percent (2008).
Of the Costa Rican people, 94 percent are white, including Mestizo (mixed European and local Indigenous people) and Castizo (mixed European and Mestizo ancestry).
Descendents of the black Jamaican immigrant workers, known as Afro-Costa Ricans, make up the next largest ethnic group, with 3 percent of the population. The remaining 3 percent of the population is divided equally between Amerindian, Chinese and others.
