Gay And Lesbian Travelers

Costa Rica is welcoming to the LGBT crowd, which has made the tropical country a popular travel destination. Despite the prominent presence of the Roman Catholic church and the machista personality of its people, gay and lesbian tourism has continually increased over the years as well as the level of acceptance. Much of the capital and Pacific coast of Costa Rica has a developed gay scene whereas the Caribbean is still discovering this type of tourism.

Gay and lesbian, or gay-friendly accommodations are not hard to find in the capital city of San Jose or nearby surroundings such as Manuel Antonio area, which has recently established a popular gay scene, becoming the “it” place for LGBT travelers. Just like the Castro District in San Francisco during the 1960s and 1970s, the middle-aged and older gay and lesbian crowd are seemingly planting roots in the Manuel Antonio region of forests and beaches by purchasing land and homes for retirement or vacationing.

Outside of the capital is The Villa Decary in Nuevo Arenal, which is owned by two men and is gay-friendly. It is beautifully surrounded by all sorts of palms and tropical plants. Gay guests are welcome at the mixed (gay and straight) Hotel Banana Azul, whose owners are also part owners with the Gecko Trail Adventures tour company who help LGBT travelers plan their vacations with their connections to gay friendly services.

There are plenty of gay bars, especially in San José, that offer prime meeting spots for LGBT tourists like the Puchos Night Club that sometimes host special events. One of the most popular is La Avispa, which has a dance floor that is always packed with people moving to the beats.
