Taxi

Taxis are a cheap and efficient mode of transportation in Costa Rica, and usually the easiest way to get around San José and most of the larger towns. For travel within cities, all taxis should use a computerized meter, called a maría, to calculate the fare. Make sure the cab driver turns it on at the beginning of your journey, and keep an eye on it to make sure he doesn't turn if off before you've reached your destination. To avoid pirate taxis, only enter red cars with a yellow triangle painted on the door (although airport taxis are orange). Outside of the cities, taxis usually have a set rate for each destination. In fact, they are a good way to get to some national parks that cannot be reached by public transport, especially if you are traveling in a small group. Be sure to arrange the price before you depart. It is not customary to tip taxi drivers – only a few coins if they help you with luggage. A word of advice: don't slam cab doors. Most cabs are well-kept and drivers do not appreciate this.
