1502- Christopher Columbus lands on the coast bring small pox that          eventually kills of the indigenous population.

1540- The country becomes part of the Spanish Vice Royalty

1561- Spanish start successfully colonizing the area.

1821- Costa Rica and the rest of the Central American territory gain independence from Spain.

1823- The country becomes part of the United Provinces of Central America.

1838- Costa Rica gains full independence.

1849-1859 Costa Rica organizes Central American resistance against the American lunatic William Walker.

1870- The country begins investing in Railroads.

1874- Banana cultivation is introduced to the region.

1899- United Fruit Company is created in a merger with the American business men Minor Cooper Keith and Andrew W. Preston.

1917- Frederico Tinoco ousts the elected president Alfredo Gonzalez.

1940- The United Christian Socialist party is started.

1948- A six week civil war is started over a disputed presidential election.

1949- Women and African-Caribbeans get the right to vote under a new constitution.

1949- A social security system is put in place and banks are nationalized.

1958- For the next 15 years the country is governed by conservative administrations.

1974- Country moves back to a socialist leadership under the PLN party.

1982- The U.S. pressures Costa Rica to oppose the Sandinistas in Nicaragua.

1985- The Contras, an anti-guerrilla force, forms for fighting the Sandinistas.

1987- Oscar Arias Sanchez wins the Nobel Peace Prize.

2002- The Social Christian Party is elected to lead the government.

2006- Oscar Arias is re-elected president in an extremely tight race.

2007- DR-CAFTA is ratified after extreme controversy.

2009- Costa Rica re-establishes ties with Cuba after 48 years.

2010- The first woman president is elected.
