Surfing - Surfing Pavones - Costa Rica

Pavones is said to have the second-longest wave in the world–or the second-longest left, depending on who you talk to–around 2 kilometers. This ideal wave is hard to catch, relying on a large south swell to reach its full potential, but for many surfers the chance for more than three minutes of straight surf time makes it worth coming all the way to this remote locale.

For beginners, surf lessons run from about $25 to $35 and up, depending on how many hours you plan to spend in the ocean. You’ll find that pretty much any local surfer will give lessons. Two instructors are: Henry–$25 for one hour (Cel: 8 861-1058) and Billy at Casa Tranquila–$35 for two hours (Tel: 277-6-2609).

Pavones Surf School provides the full surf experience, offering lessons for all levels of surfer beginner to advanced, as well as meals, equipment and accommodation ($1400 per person, group rates available). The school can also help you arrange transportation to Pavones. Tel: 619-482-9254, E-mail: alex@pavonessurfschool.com OR pavonessurfschool@yahoo.com, URL: www.pavonessurfschool.com.

Sea Kings is the only actual surf shop in town; they rent and sell boards and board accessories and set up lessons and tours ($35 for lessons, $20 for board rental). Tel: 2 776-2015, Cel: 011-506.8393.6982, Fax: 011-506-2776-2015, E-mail: seakings@racsa.co.cr, URL: www.shootingstarstudio.org/SeaKingsShop.htm.

There are also some decent rights and lefts in neighboring Punta Banco, about a 45 minute walk down the beach. Cabo Matapalo, which can be reached from Pavones by boat, has reputable waves as well, and various outfits arrange day trips there (ask at Sea Kings or Cabinas Carol). People go to Matapalo for Backwash Bay, which has an excellent right and big, fast waves reaching up to 10 feet, or for Playa Matapalo, which has a bigger break on average and a great right point.
