Getting To And Away

There are a variety of options for getting to and from Montezuma. Local buses depart from the bus stop next door to Hostel El Parque. Buses go to San José (9-12 hours), Santa Teresa (1 hour), Cabo Blanco (30 minutes) and Paquera (1.5 hours), where you can catch the ferry to Puntarenas. Ask around for bus times as they are subject to change. The private shuttle, Interbus, offers quicker transport between Montezuma and San José, and at just under forty dollars it’s worth it if you don’t want to spend twelve hours on a bus.

You can access Montezuma by car or taxi from Cóbano, but this stretch of road requires a four wheel-drive vehicle in the rainy season. Taxis can also take you to nearby towns like Tambor, Mal País, Cabo Blanco and Paquera, and in the rainy season plenty of four wheel-drive taxis are available.

Jet-boat transfers are available between Montezuma and Jacó (about an hour). Although they’re more expensive at thirty dollars, they save you hours of travel. Instead of docking, the boats do a beach landing, dress appropriately and wear water safe shoes.
