Guatil is a small community about 12 kilometers outside of Santa Cruz that specializes in making pre-Columbian Chorotega-style pottery. The pieces are made from local clays and decorated in the traditional blacks, creams and reds. The artwork is proudly displayed for sale outside the artists’ homes and if you’re interested, you can probably take a tour of their studios. There is a local bus from Santa Cruz, but since bus times can be unreliable and you don’t want to get stuck here, it’s probably best to take a taxi or drive yourself.
