As word gets ‘round that Santa Teresa and MalpaÃs are laudable hotspots, new bars and restaurants are sporadically popping up along the beach and road that connect the two. For some affordable local flavor, try a casado- a hearty plate of rice and beans, salad, plantains, something starchy, and your choice of chicken, beef, fish, or veggies. Fresh seafood and a wide variety of international fare are widely available, as is a variety of tropical beverages. There are also a few grocery stores in town and a colorful open-air organic market on Saturdays in nearby Playa Carmen that’s certainly worth a visit if you’re planning to stick around for a few days.
