Tamarindo

Partly thanks to the release of the surf film ‘Endless Summer II’ in the early nineties, Tamarindo has seen its tourism skyrocket over the past few years, to the point where this once quiet fishing village is now the number one party destination in Costa Rica. Surfers, travelers, students and even honeymooners flock to this small coastal town for a slice of rose-tinted pura vida – usually washed down with a cerveza or several. And why not? Tamarindo has a great nightlife scene going on for a beach town – it’s always ladies night or happy hour somewhere. Whether you want to chill out and catch up on your sports, shake it away to reggaeton or get some live music, this town has it all. Just remember; the dress code is beach-casual.

The downside of this uber-happening reputation is the prices; restaurants and accommodation in Tamarindo are certainly not cheap compared to other areas of Costa Rica. However, it is still possible to live on a budget here; particularly if you’re smart about where you sleep and when you go out. Restaurants range from all-American BBQ joints to laid-back sushi bars, with everything in between. Local food is also available, although you have to know where to look for it.

Of course, nightlife is by no means the only thing that draws the crowds to Tamarindo – the outdoors lifestyle and the beaches remain the main attractions. The number one activity in here is surfing and there are endless surf schools and board rental places in town. But if that doesn’t appeal then anything from renting an ATV to a sailing boat to getting out of town for a quick zip-line through the jungle is possible. People don’t come here to find culture or ‘the real Costa Rica’ but they do come here to have fun; and that is what Tamarindo does best.

There is an airstrip with regular flights to and from San José. Playa Tamarindo is located two hours by car or bus from Liberia.
