Northwest Costa Rica is outstanding in natural beauty and has something for all types of nature lovers. From active volcanoes to lush, ecologically-rich cloudforest, through to national parks, sightseeing opportunities abound. When you are done with these, to the very far west, the Pacific Coast and Nicoya Peninsula offer stunning beaches for a well deserved spot of rest and relaxation.
Highlights in the region include:
Possibly the most active volcano in Central America, Volcán Arenal is worth a visit. The nearby town of Fortuna serves as a convenient base from which to explore the volcano and the surrounding area.
The Monteverde cloudforest reserve provides spectacular opportunities to view wildlife. Access to the reserve is via one of two towns, Santa Elena and Monteverde.
The Parque Nacional Rincón de la Vieja can be accessed from the town of Liberia. The volcano, Rincón de la Vieja is active and supports hot sulphur pools and bubbling mud. Natural beauty is plentiful here.
About an hour north of Liberia, in the Parque Nacional Santa Rosa it is possible to view nesting turtles on the attractive beaches, including Playa Nancite and Playa Naranjo.
