We spent most of our honeymoon here. It was very different than the tourist-y beach town of Montezuma where we started--Lands In Love is secluded, sleepy (at least in May), relatively cool (it's a cloud forest--often misty), and felt safe (as opposed to Liberia where we got our bags stolen). It's a great place for those who want to take it easy: If you get bored there are a lot of things to do, but most of the time we chose to just lounge around and watch hummingbirds come to the feeder outside our window or take walks in the misty jungle. The thing we liked best about the hotel was the love that the staff obviously has for it. Every surface is hand-decorated, with little vine and flower motifs painted on the hand towels and bedroom walls--little touches like that say that they've got a lot personally invested in it. The staff are mostly Israelis who wanted to find a new life of peace and healing, and bought this hotel. Their happiness with what they're doing makes it a peaceful and beautiful place.Incidentally, this is a *great* place for people traveling with pets. The staff are animal lovers (thus the all-vegetarian cuisine), and when they came to Costa Rica they brought a lot of stray dogs and cats they had rescued from the streets of Tel Aviv. These stay in a stable or outbuilding converted to a kennel, and your pet can romp with them. This kennel is right along the (long) driveway in to the hotel, which makes you feel pretty safe--nobody could sneak along that driveway in the middle of the night without the dogs waking up the place.Just next door to the hotel is an "adventure company" that has contracted with the hotel to provide horseback trail rides, river rafting (family-friendly, not exactly whitewater), guided nature walks, and one of the "canopy tours" popular in Costa Rica, a series of about 10 zip lines through the cloud forest--*not* your summer-camp zip-line experience. Our favorite, actually, was the nature walk. In the zip line and horseback ride, we kept wondering what the various tropical trees and plants were, and our guides were unable to tell us much. The nature guide, though, was a young man working on a degree in "eco-tourism," and between his partial English, my much-more-partial Spanish, and a field guide book, we got all the answers we'd been looking for. (That towering tree, over 10 feet wide at the base? That was a *ficus.* Yup, like the office plants.)Okay, I can't leave out the food. Yes, it's all vegetarian, and if you need a steak a day, you might want to drive 10 minutes to a nearby roadside "soda" (Costa-Rican short-order grill) and get a casado con carne. But I'll bet you won't need to. They have versions of a lot of dishes like spaghetti with "meat" sauce that you'd swear had meat in them. They have the best darn lasagna I've *ever* had, meat or not. And of course, being Israeli, they make some *really* good filafel, hummus, and tangy yogurt-based cheese. I highly recommend getting the meal package--for one thing, that soda *is* about the only other thing within a half-hour drive. But besides, it's delicious. For pictures and such, check out their website at landsinlove.com
Service, nature, food
If you are in Costa Rica you must visit this place. The best food in Costa Rica and the most friendly and welcoming staff in an amazing cloud forset.
I would like to recommend from 3 main reasons: The location, the rooms and the staff. The place is located in a hidden magical valley, surrounded by cloud forest, and all this is less than 1.5 hours from the airport and 45 minutes from Arenal volcano which is the main attraction in CR. The rooms has all the accommodation to make the family stay the best possible: large cable TV (for my kids), free fast internet (for me) and coffee maker (for my wife). Last, but definitely not least are the staff. 25 good friends from Israel who made their dream for a paradise of their own come true in amazing CR, and they made this place with the desire of sharing their love with the rest of the world. I have never been in a place that treated me with such hospitality and made me feel like home away from home. I fully recommend this place.
