Caves - Other Activity Nicoya - Costa Rica

The caves are the highlight of Barra Honda, and if you want to explore them, you’ll have to hire two guides (about $52). They work in pairs because they use a two-person belay system for helping you descend a cable ladder, which is the only way to enter the cave. This non-invasive entry method is what’s helped the caves maintain such a pristine condition. The only cave open to the general public is Terciopelo, which has the largest number of formations and some of the most beautiful as well. One such formation is “The Organ,” which produces musical sounds when tapped lightly.

Experienced cavers who want to explore other caves in the park will need permission from the park supervisor. This can be obtained by writing them in advance. If granted permission, you’ll want to check out the Santa Ana, Trampa and Nicoya caves. Santa Ana is the deepest cave at 240 meters (787.4 ft). Trampa has the most vertical descent, a 52-meter (170.6 ft) sheer drop from the entrance to the first ledge. It also has the most chambers, including the famous Stink-Pot Hole. Nicoya is where large numbers of human remains were found in 1970.

In the high season (December-April), you’ll want to reserve guides well in advance since you can’t access Terciopelo without them. You’ll need to be in good physical condition to enter the caves as well.
