Nicknamed the "White City," Liberia is a friendly, clean city with a distinct colonial feel. The capital of Guanacaste Province, Liberia is also a gateway to the nearby Guanacaste beaches and quickly becoming a popular hub for travelers heading off to other more attractive destinations. Though significantly smaller than the metropolis of San José, Liberia is coveniently located close to a number of popular beaches and national parks. The beaches of Tamarindo are nearby, as well as new resorts around the Papagayo Gulf, just thirty to forty minutes by bus. Outdoor enthusiasts can also head from Liberia into Parque Nacional Santa Rosa, Parque Nacional Rincon de la Vieja and Parque Nacional Guanasate. Liberia's international airport makes it an important hub for transition travel, with many American airline carriers now operating here.
