Getting To and Away from Drake Bay

Most travelers access Drake’s Bay through Sierpe (see Getting To and Away from Sierpe). If you are staying at a mid-range or high-end lodge, transportation will typically be provided for you. You can also take a Sansa or Nature Air flight into the Drake Bay area, and then take a 4x4 taxi to your hotel. It is also possible to drive to Drake from San Jose, Puerto Jimenez and various other locations. However, there is a river that sits on the pathway from the airport to Drake, and it sometimes floods in rainy season, making travel by car impossible. You can also fly into the Palmar airstrip and then make a boat connection from Sierpe to Drake.
Buses leave parque los Jaguares at around 4:20 a.m. and 1:20 p.m. for Puerto Jimenez, Rincon and La Palma and cost $5. The bus leaves La Palma at 11 a.m., reaching Rincon at 11:30 a.m. and then arriving in Drake around 1:30 p.m. Taking private transportation (like taxis) to one of these locations will run about $100.
Boats to Sierpe leave at 7:15 a.m. and cost $15. Boats from Sierpe to Drake leave between 10 and 11:30 a.m.
