Whales migrate to Drake Bay from both the Northern and Southern hemispheres to calve, which makes the bay a fantastic place to go whale watching. You see dolphins and whales here year-round, but the best months for seeing whales are between December-March and July-November. Species you may see include: spotted, bottlenose, roughtooth, rissos and spinner dolphins, and humback, orca, pseudo orca, sei, brydes, pilot and beaked whales. The most commonly spotted whale species is the humpback, since Drake has the longest humpback season in the world. The standard tour, that most hotels offer, will take you out to see the humpacks. However, it is worth noting that other tours that involve long boat rides, such as trips to Isla del CaƱo, which give you a good chance of spotting whales and dolphins as well. So if your resources are limited, you might think about omitting a special whale tour. Whale and dolphin tours are an all-day activity. Touching or swimming with the animals is prohibited.
