You can do a little self-guided hiking around Agujitas, but the big hiking destination near Drake Bay is Corcovado National Park. The simplest way to hike through Corcovado is by guided tour, although you could also arrange boat transportation to and from the park and do the trails yourself. However, there are no places to spend a night inside the park and leaving the trails is prohibited. There are generally two hike options in Corcovado – San Pedrillo and Sirena. Sirena is further away from Agujitas and therefore more expensive, but you have the opportunity to see a couple of species you won’t find at San Pedrillo, such as Baird's Tapir. Trails can get bogged down and muddy, but your tour should provide you with tall rubber boots for the journey. Lunch is also included on most tours. It is a good idea to bring your own poncho. Animals you are likely to see on either trail include: scarlet macaws, toucans, coatis, snakes, lizards, agoutis, crocodiles and a few different species of monkey. There is also a short trail on Isla del Caño – one fork takes you to a vista and the other to a clearing with a few of the pre-Columbian spheres and the type of artifacts for which the area is famous.
