Getting To and Away from Carate

The closest major city to Carate is Puerto Jimenez. A flight from Jimenez to Carate on an Alfa Romeo air taxi is just five minutes. Driving it takes about two hours. You can take a taxi, which will cost between $60 and $70, or you can go in the public colectivo (a modified pickup truck). The colectivo makes two trips daily, except on Sundays, leaving Jimenez at 6a.m. and 1:30p.m. and leaving Carate at 8:30a.m. and 3:30p.m. The trip costs around $7. From the Carate pulperia it's about a 40 minute walk to the La Leona Ranger's Station. Rental cars from Toucan Travel in Puerto Jimenez cost between $300 and $600 a week, and vehicles can be left at the pulperia for $5 a day.
