This small, charming town was founded by American Quakers in the 19th century. It is famous for its tasty cheese, many varieties of which are produced here. Home to both a butterfly museum and a serptentarium, Santa Elena has the advantage of proximity to both the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve and the Mount Verde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve.
