Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve

Birdwatching, Hiking

By Caroline Bennett

Located on the southernmost tip of the Nicoya Peninsula just a few kilometers southeast of Santa Teresa, the Cabo Blanco nature reserve stretches for 1172 hectares of well-protected land and sea and is the oldest protected area in Costa Rica. Once restricted to scientists and park rangers, the park now welcomes visitors to hike through the reserve on a well defined path that winds through 4.5 km of lush forest.

The Sueco Trail leads you into the reserve, climbing up quickly and passing small rivers, then descending through the forest to the pretty and unspoiled Cabo Blanco beach, perfect for a refreshing dip. Make your way quietly and you´re likely to be entertained by howler monkeys, sloths, and an array of local creatures.

Be sure to stop at the information stands at the entrance to the park, where rangers are happy to answer questions and you can top off your water bottle.

hours: Wednesday to Sunday, 8 am - 4 pm Cost: $ 8 entrance fee
