San Jose Hotels

The small Central American country, which is situated between Nicaragua and Panama, has seven unique regions: Central Valley, Central Pacific, Northern Zone, Caribbean, South Pacific, North Pacific and the Los Santos Valley. Each offers visitors a different taste of the tropical country’s personality with sights and activities. One of the best ways that you can experience a new place is by your choice in lodging.

Costa Rica has your typical hotel chains and all-inclusive resorts for the tourists who like to travel in style and luxury. It has the hostels and guesthouses for the backpackers and travelers who want to develop that deeper relationship with the country and its culture. However, Costa Rica also has lodges deep within the scenic settings that have given the country its label as being mega-diverse due to the large amounts of flora and fauna species located within its borders.

No matter where you decide to lay your head you are bound to get a rich, fulfilling taste of Costa Rica.

You can expect to have to deal with higher prices for hotels in San Jose, Costa Rica. Backpackers and businessmen alike will notice a slightly inflated price on anything from a dingy hostel to a five-star luxury hotel. This is due to the fact that it is such a popular destination among tourists, and the base camp for arrivals and departures to Costa Rica is San Jose. Camping is only available in some national parks and in various natural areas (which require admission from landowners or park rangers), so don´t expect to pitch a tent in San Jose.

However, San Jose does offer ample options, with around 200 hotels, countless little bed and breakfasts and plenty of hostels. Hotels in San Jose are generally nothing special, unless you want to pay upwards of US$100.00 per night. Your best option may be mid-range B&B´s, which usually have a lot more in the way of character and authenticity than hotels. One of the most popular spots for backpackers in Costa Rica is the aptly-named Costa Rica Backpackers Hostel, which offers clean rooms and a close proximity to the city center. Make sure you ask to see the room before you rent it, because you may end up with the dingiest room in the place. Booking ahead, especially during Christmastime or Easter is highly recommended for nicer hotels. Some of Viva´s recommendations are listed on this page:
