Any visitor to Baracoa, the oldest settlement in Cuba, will likely sample the regional chocolate (the scent wafts through the colonial streets), drink a mojito, and visit the weekly carnival, where pigs roast on every corner. Yet few discover the hidden beach Playita Blanca, a 20-minute hike from this charming town, first discovered by Columbus. Befriend a local, who will guide you there. The trip over a rickety wooden bridge and an uphill hike in the sweltering Caribbean sun will be well worth the effort. Emerge into a wooded area with a cove of glittering turquoise waters. Don't be surprised if you are the only ones there. This secret gem is a refreshing change from the typical white sand beaches of the region. Pack a lunch and spend the day lounging in a coastal cove as pristine as when it was first discovered.
