The main option for getting around Cuba by bus is to use buses from Viazul (www.viazul.cu), the tailor-made tourist transportation company. Buses are generally in good condition with functional foot rests and air conditioning, and the service usually runs to time. Most buses operate into and out of Havana, with a few exceptions. Buses also stop briefly along the routes, with an opportunity to buy snacks and visit the restrooms.
Buying a ticket is a bit of a process. When you arrive at the terminal, you need to first go to the Information counter to reserve a spot on your bus of choice. You then make a line at the next counter, to pay for your seat. Then you return to the Information desk line to confirm your place.
When traveling with Viazul, you are required to arrive 30 minutes in advance. This is with good reason. Sometimes the line for checking your bags can take a while. You can take up to 20 kg with you on the bus – if you bring more there will be an additional cost. You will be given a ticket for your checked baggage. Don’t lose it.
After checking in your baggage, you proceed to the clean waiting room. Here there is an opportunity to purchase postcards of Che Guevara, or head to the cafeteria, which is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Your bus will be called.
If arriving at the Havana terminal (Av. 26 esq. Zoologico, Nuevo Vedado), there are usually plenty of Lada taxis outside to transport you to your next location.
It is also sometimes possible to travel with the bus company Astro, whose buses leave from the main bus terminal, Terminal de Omnibuses Nacionales (Av. Independencia, No. 101, esq. 19 de Mayo). Prices are cheaper than with Viazul, but it varies from time to time whether as a traveler, you can use these buses.
