Puerta Del Diablo - Devil's Door - City Park Los Planes De Renderos - El Salvador

Los Planes de Renderos is a Mountain Village which features four major activities, ordered below by popularity:

Los Planes de Renderos - 3 major sights to see

Los Planes is 25 minutes by car from downtown San Salvador, and 12 minutes to the intersection of highway 5, which runs between the airport to the city. Three sights are worth visiting if you have an extra 1-3 hours.

The Mirador / The Viewpoint
Turn left at the fork to arrive at the Mirador, located right in the middle of the restaurant and bar area in Los Planes. Here you will see breathtaking views of the city below, Lake Ilopango, and Mountains near and far.

Puerta del Diablo / Devil's Door -
Turn right at the Fork or "Triangle" when arriving in Los Planes to get to The Devil's Door (Puerta del Diablo), Balboa Park (Parque Balboa) or the Family Park (Parque de Familia).

Very popular on weekends, the Devil's Door features souvenirs, pupusa stands, and "atol" - a drink made out of corn meal. Weekdays it is much quieter, but best visited during the day only.

There is a scenic vista, and the name "Devil's Door" comes from the curious rock formation. Break a sweat walking up high on the rocks or stay down low towards the bottom.

Both Balboa Park and the Family Park are nice for a short visit, and entrance was $2 as of late 2010. These parks are more for strolling than hiking, and the Family Park features a gorgeous central area with many different types of flowers, and an eatery with pupusas and fast foods, and souvenirs.

Get a bite to eat or drink something refreshing at one of the fun restaurant bars, "Boomwallos", "The Attic" (La Atica), both featuring spectacular views just like the Mirador. The Christian Rock cafe features coffee and pastries, and the Tampiqueña across the street offers local and Mexican dishes.

You can stay the night at "Hostal Los Planes" located across the street from the bars and Mirador.

Getting There
From downtown San Salvador, head South on either 8th Avenue or Espana Avenue, and follow signs towards San Marcos or San Jacinto. If you take 8th Avenue, get in the right lane as soon as you see army barracks on the right, and fork RIGHT to get to Los Planes. At the light at the bottom of the short steep hill, turn LEFT. If coming from Avenida Espana, turn right at the Shell station at the fork, going towards the Zoo. You will drive past the Zoo on the left. Turn LEFT at the intersection after the Zoo, then drive straight. Each of these routes gets you to the "Street to Los Planes de Renderos" (Calle or Carretera A Los Planes..) which is the only street going there from that part of the city. A road from Santa Tecla also leads to Los Planes, from the opposite side of the city.

Take the "Carretera" or "Calle" to Los Planes de Renderos.

Travel Tips: Devil's Door OK is busy with local tourists on weekends, day and night. Weekdays, remember the "safety in numbers" rule and maybe avoid weeknights unless part of a larger guided tour. Views from the Mirador are just as good as the Devil's door, so you wont be missing much on a weeknight.

Price Description: Devil's Door and Mirador are free. Parks are $2 entrance.

Relative price: Budget

You Need to Bring: Bring a sweatshirt! It can get chilly for some people, as this is a high elevation mountaintop area and can dip into the mid-50s during rainy season (April - October).
