Casa Frolaz is run by friendly and travel-savvy owner and host, Javier Diaz, who is more than happy to provide information on local trips and excursions to guests at his warm and welcoming home. Casa Frolaz offers the only dorm-style accommodation for budget travellers in Santa Ana (a bed in a mixed dorm with shared bathroom is US $7 per night), and there are private en-suite doubles (US $18 per night) available as well. Camping in the leafy garden out back is also an option, but contact Javier in advance.

Meals are not included or available in the hostel – although delicious fresh coffee is complimentary in the morning, and there is a well-equipped kitchen for guests to use. Although there are no shared computers, those with laptops can connect to Wi-fi for free in the casa, and there is a high-speed internet café just around the corner. Guests can also have their laundry done for US $3 a load.

The main draw for this hostel seems to be its cosy homely ambiance (guests can often be found watching a wide range of Spanish and English DVDs available in the lounge, or dipping into the impressive selection of books). If there’s any drawback, it is perhaps the fact that it is situated 15 to 20 minutes walk from Santa Ana’s centre, and the walk back after dark down dimly lit streets can feel a little sketchy.
