At 3,763 meters (12,346 ft), Volcán de Fuego is considered to be a more strenuous climb that its neighbors and is the highest active volcano in Guatemala. It is named for its consistent activity and has been spewing lava off and on, at a low levels, for decades. Fuego has erupted more than 60 times in the past 500 years. Connected by a ridge to Volcán Actenago, there are a couple different ways to summit. The Alotenago Route has a considerable elevation gain and will offer most hikers a decent challenge. There are several campsites on the trail so making a two day summit bid is possible. The second way to the summit is by La Soledad Route. From the base of the volcano there are several well maintained trails that lead to one main path to the summit of Actenago. From there you can follow the ridge to Volcán Fuego.
