The ruins of Santo Domingo church and convent complex stand inside the grounds of the beautiful Hotel Casa Santo Domingo on the eastern edge of town. Between 1542 and 1666, the Dominican order built one of the largest, richest and most important convents in the colonial city. However, during the 1773 earthquake, both the convent and church were destroyed and its precious works of art were transferred to the new capital. Much later, stone and other materials were taken from the ruins to reconstruct houses and other buildings. After archeological investigations and restoration, the hotel opened in 1989 and the remains of the ruins form an integral part of the Paseo de los Museos. There is a charge for non-guests to enter the ruins and museum complex.
