This large, white monument was built in 1953 in honor of Rafael Landivar, the great poet of colonial Guatemala who died in 1793. His ashes rest inside. Closed to the public, the monument is surrounded by gardens and can only be viewed through iron railings from the street. Around the corner on the on Calle de la Pólvora y Landivar, a plaque marks the wall of the now-ruined house where he was born in 1731.
