The Palacio de los Capitanes, the first two-storey building in Antigua, lines the entire south side of the Parque Central. Built in 1558, for more than two centuries, it was the seat of the Spanish colonial government for most of Central America and Chiapas. More recently, it housed the police department, government and tourist offices. It’s currently unoccupied due to restoration, although it is open to the public for viewing. Tours are offered twice a day at 10.30 a.m. and 2.30 p.m. You can wander around alone if you wish but watch where you step. It’s expected to fully reopen in 2010.
