Palacio Del Ayuntamiento – Museo De Santiago, Museo Del Libro Antiguo - Museum Antigua - Guatemala

On the north side of Parque Central is the Palacio del Ayuntamiento. Dating back to 1743, it’s now home to the municipalidad, or town hall, and two museums. Climb the stairs to the upper level to enjoy a view of the park, cathedral and volcanoes.

Previously the old jail and prison chapel, the Museo de Santiago displays colonial artifacts of furniture, portraits, religious paintings, weapons and coats of arms. The original stone sirenas or mermaids removed from the fountain in the park after the 1773 earthquake are prized exhibits. Some museum information is in English and also in braille.
