Surrounded by important buildings dating back from colonial times, this central plaza is the main hangout for locals. It’s always packed on weekends and festivals, when it is the scene for concerts, parades and processions. Mature trees, gardens and pathways lined with wooden benches radiate from a central fountain where water jets from mermaid breasts. Shoe shiners, indigenous women selling handicrafts and guides offering their services mingle with tourists and locals. This is a no-go area for tuk tuks and the south side is closed to traffic so it’s a relatively peaceful place to chill out for a few hours.
