Antigua Hotels

Antigua is the king of sleeps. Almost every street is packed with hotels of all descriptions so you are guaranteed somewhere to lay your head unless you arrive during Semana Santa (Holy Week) when everywhere is chock-full and prices skyrocket.

All budgets and tastes are covered, from backpacker hostels and family run posadas (guesthouses) to more luxurious boutique and five star hotels. Many places of all price ranges have a rooftop terrace with gorgeous volcano views and most rates include breakfast, Internet and drinking water. Antigua hostels are plentiful and varied; the most popular backpacker destination is the Black Cat Hostel, and its newer, more spacious companion the Black Cat Inn. Another popular option, offering free coffee and a pleasant courtyard is La Casa del Huseped Hostel.

In the Calzada Santa Lucia near the market and bus station cheap hotels are in abundance. Although the area is handy for transport and a thriving part of town, it’s not the quietest spot to stay.

Those wanting to camp or park their camper vans safely overnight can stop for free in the grounds of Disetur, the Tourist Police (Tel: (502) 7934-6513/6522-24) south of the artisan market.

An alternative if you are seeking a bit of peace is to stay in an eco-lodge tree house or cabin on the hillside overlooking Antigua, surrounding villages and volcanoes.

New places are constantly arriving on the scene so it’s worth checking out a few before deciding.
