Getting Around

Antigua is small and compact enough to walk everywhere and on foot is by far the best way to see the town.

Around the park you can pick up a ride in a horse-drawn carriage for a leisurely tour of the city. Prices vary widely so ask around before hopping on.

A more exhilarating way to explore the city is by three-wheeled tuk tuk. Imagine a souped-up golf cart driven by a wannabe Formula One racer. These also go to villages around Antigua. Tell the driver your destination and negotiate a price. Within town the standard rate is $1.25. Outside prices vary so check out several. They run between 5 a.m.-9 p.m. and are prohibited around Parque Central.

After this time use a registered taxi. They run 24 hours/day and are safer but more expensive. There is no fixed price but a trip within the city should cost about $3.15. Agree before getting in. There are taxi stands by Parque Central near the cathedral and in front of Pollo Campero near the market.

The local buses, camionetas, leave from the bus station behind the mercado and go to all the villages around and to Guatemala City. You can also wave one down in the street. Prices are fixed and vary according to destination.

Travel agencies have shuttles to the airport and all the main tourist destinations but shop around as prices and reliability vary.
