"La Canche" is a little known instituition in Antigua Guatemala among tourists. Run by a saintly elderly couple, it is very much a beautiful aspect of Antigua's local community. Directly across from perhaps the most spectacular church in all the city, La Merced, La Canche appears to be like any "mom and pop" tienda from the outside (and inside for that matter). But take this advice: step in, slip around the register toward the back like you've done it before, and a whole corridor opens up with tables in a dimly lit romantic setting. Aside from the experience of rubbing elbows family style with people that very rarely serve or eat with gringos, the food is excellent and very cheap, and your presence is genuinely appreciated. Order the local delicacy pepian if it's on the menu. This is a rare treat in Antigua to escape the hordes of tourists!
Can't find the sign for "La Canche"? Well stop looking, it's not there. The name refers to the owner's blondish / lightish hair. Ask around, you will sound pretty cool.
