The town of San Antonio Aguas Calientes lies six kilometers (4 mi.) outside of Antigua, but still retains an interesting indigenous vibe. The Kaqchickel people still reside in the area, but an influx of slaves during the slave trade add Afro-Caribbean element. Aside from its diverse ethnic composition, the town specializes in producing crafts, particularly woven textiles and wood carvings, and is therefore a great place to find authentic souvenirs. The town is relatively prosperous because of the craft industry, and has some of the highest literacy rates in Guatemala. Visiting San Antonio Aguas Calientes would make a nice half-day trip.
