From Guatemala City or Antigua, Ranchitos del Quetzal is about 30 minutes before Cobán and a few hundred meters from the entrance to the Biotopo del Quetzal. Quaint and rustic, Ranchitos offers simple rooms, which each have two or three beds, a balcony and private bath. A private trail on the premises, helpful staff, delicious food and its proximity to the Biotopo del Quetzal make this an excellent choice at an affordable price. Some visitors report more luck spotting the rare quetzal at Ranchitos than in the Biotopo. (While V!VA was there, there were four quetzals spotted at Ranchitos in less than 24 hours and none in the Biotopo.)

If traveling by bus from Guatemala City, take a Monja Blanca bus to Cobán and ask the driver to let you off at Ranchitos del Quetzal, right after the Biotopo del Quetzal.
