Safety

Unfortunately people hiking around the highlands have become targets for thieves, so hire a guide where possible. Almost every village or town has them, and hiking with someone who knows their way around can result in a much more enjoyable experience. In the bigger towns, such as Chichicastenango, it is recommended that you don’t walk around late at night, particularly not on your own or outside of the immediate town center. Stay alert and aware of your surroundings, just as you would anywhere else, and you shouldn’t run into any trouble.

Here are some related tips to help plan your trip to Central Highlands : Safety, Safety in Nebaj, Safety in Chichicastenango and Safety in Santa Cruz del Quiché.
