Things To See And Do

Guatemala’s Central Highlands offer fantastic hiking opportunities and various activities for those interested in the outdoors. Nature reserves and the area around Lake Atitlán are home to unique ecosystems where visitors can enjoy amazing scenery and catch a glimpse of a variety of wildlife. The Central Highlands are also home to several volcanoes that are ideal for horseback riding, hiking and experiencing some natural hot springs. There are numerous indigenous villages where you can sample some authentic Guatemalan culture. Markets selling woven textiles and artisan wares attract plenty of tourists, as do the less commercial markets where you can watch animals being auctioned off by local farmers. Mayan ruins and old colonial churches tell of Guatemala’s diverse history. Much of the highland area suffered greatly during Guatemala’s civil war but the people are valiantly moving forward with an admirable sense of courage and optimism for their future. The stunning scenery, rich history and friendly people are bound to leave you with the sense that Guatemala’s Central Highlands were well worth the visit.
