When To Go

The climate in the highlands is quite manageable. There are two basic seasons; rainy (May to October) and dry (November to April). While not preferable, traveling in the rainy season isn't a big deal, usually it only rains for a few hours in the afternoon. It can get very cold at night and of course even colder in December and January, so come prepared. If you plan on doing a lot of hiking while in the area, keep yourself informed about the weather before you go and while you are traveling around. If you are interested in experiencing Guatemalan highland culture at its best, look into local festivals and when they happen. Many of the villages and towns around Lake Atitlán celebrate Christmas, Holy Week and other regional festivals in style.
