Tucked away from it all, Jaibalito is a tiny village whose inhabitants primarily speak the Mayan language of Katchikel (though they also speak Spanish). During the day, men take to their boats to fish on the lake while women head to the fields or settle down to some weaving. The majority of the villagers are children who are more than happy to speak shyly with you or be enticed into playing a game. Few tourists stay overnight but those who do will have the chance to appreciate the charming change of pace that arrives as the sun heads to the horizon, when the day of work is done.
Apart from services available through the hotels, there are no other tourist amenities. Advertised tours, Spanish lessons or activities are usually based in Santa Cruz. Next to the dock, two small café huts sell snacks and drinks.
